Introduction

Sounds of a Bach concerto drift down the corridor, mingled with the harmonies of a Mozart quartet. On a deck overlooking a lake and rolling farmland, six girls lean intensely over sketchpads, pastels and pencils in hand, as they try to capture the evanescent hues of the summer twilight. Downstairs in a studio, another group of campers energetically improvise dialogue for the upcoming puppet show.

Now entering its sixth summer, the Tizmoret Music, Drama, and Art Workshop is open to girls from 12 to 19 years of age. In its opening three seasons, Tizmoret has provided a nurturing environment where more than thirty campers from throughout the United States, Canada, and Israel, have been give the opportunity to focus on their art. These young Jewish female artists relished the chance to further develop their music and art skills in a Kosher setting.

A day at Tizmoret begins with davening (prayer) and continues with an assortment of activities that allow each girl to hone her craft. String players are placed into classes covering multiple aspects of music performance, including orchestra, chamber music, repertoire class, and private lessons. There is time in their schedule for individual practice as well, and solo pieces may be played in the event of a master class. Art and drama students delve into various media, such as painting, sketching, and jewelry making, and explore the world of puppetry. In addition to the core curriculum, dance and choir electives are also on each camper's agenda. Prayer and Torah study are an important part of the Tizmoret environment, and both are incorporated into the Tizmoret schedule; please note that no previous knowledge of either is required in order to come and enjoy Tizmoret. While the bulk of the day is spent on their respective arts, the girls also participate in typical camp activities, such as swimming or bowling. This ten-day camp welcomes all Jewish girls between the ages of twelve and nineteen with serious interests in the areas of string music, art, and drama.

Baltimore is truly fortunate to host a kosher art, music and drama camp for girls. With its distinguished faculty, wonderful facilities, and exciting program, it looks as though Tizmoret will once again adorn the lovely hills of central Maryland with traces and sties of uncommon beauty this summer.
